In response to the title of this Exhibition, Visceral, the artist is presenting a work reminis-cent of two great masters of modern painting – Pablo Picasso and Francis Bacon – through its overlapping images of the inside of a slaughterhouse in a city in Brazilian Amazonia. It alludes to the leading role played by cattle in the region’s agribusiness. The butchering evokes the harmful practice of cattle farming in environmentally protected areas, and the red reveals a density of swift and brutal blows to the viscera, evoking the violence that is now sweeping through this region known as the “lungs of the world.” At the same time, “Passando a Boiada” calls to mind a figurative phrase spoken by Ricardo Salles, Brazil’s former Minister of the Environment, at a meeting in May of 2020 with the current Presi-dent and his ministers. It means, “to send the whole herd of cattle through,” referring to legislation to gut environmental regulations in Amazonia while everyone’
