Marsha P. Johnson (1945–1992) played a key role in the 1969 Stonewall Riots, a pivotal event in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. After Stonewall, she and her friend Sylvia Rivera founded the Street Transvestites Action Revolutionaries (STAR), supporting and housing homeless LGBTQ+ youth and struggling sex workers.
During the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, she was actively involved in raising awareness and fundraising, caring for her friends while struggling with her own mental health and HIV diagnosis. Her activism and advocacy continued until her untimely death from homicide in 1992.
Today, Marsha P. Johnson's legacy continues through the Marsha P. Johnson Institute, which advocates for the rights of Black transgender people. She remains a symbol of resilience and hope, inspiring future generations in the fight for equality and justice.
