The painting compoisition represents a submarine, undersea, or underwater earthquake which is an earthquake that occurs underwater at the bottom of a body of water, especially an ocean. They are the leading cause of tsunamis. The magnitude can be measured scientifically by the use of the moment magnitude scale and the intensity can be assigned using the Mercalli intensity scale. Understanding plate tectonics helps to explain the cause of submarine earthquakes.
The inspiration for this artwork came from an experience that I had with an earthquake which happened in Manhattan.  It was small but it made the room that I was in sway.  I didn't know whether to run out of the building in case it collapsed or not.  Was it safer on the street or inside?  What if the other buildings collapsed while I was walking down the street.  The end result was that I left the building and walked to the nearest park and waited until it was safe to go back.
