Description Materhood:
This 1x1 meter acrylic painting on canvas shows the dance of motherhood and family–the thin line that we draw as mothers between giving, growing, freedom, and holding, caring, keeping close. As a mother of three and a therapist for at-risk teenagers, I chose to express this topic in an abstract and symbolic way. The energetic, round shapes and bright yellows and oranges symbolize the parents who protect their children like warriors, while at the same time giving them the freedom to deal with challenges, each in their own way. Each child and parent–and each round shape in the painting–has its own space and freedom to become who it really is, and to experience this world as an optimistic, allowing place in which it’s possible to realize dreams and create beauty and hope. The green field symbolizes the growth and development of each family member. The shiny white and yellow brushstrokes in the center of the painting hint at the magical sparks of light in each of us. As each person develops in their own way, these sparks of light come out and create a harmonious canvas of unity among each part of the whole. This brings about another greater light that each person in a family nurtures and is nurtured from.
