Technique: Acrylic Gouache on Gesso-Primed Paper
The title is a bit hard to read, but in Japanese, ✖︎ is pronounced “BATSU (バツ, or バッテン)”. In the painting, some people are knitting, and at the center, someone sits wrapped in what has been knitted by others. When knitting, sometimes the needles cross. Alone, this doesn’t matter, but when there are several people forming a circle around someone, it can look as if multiple people are pointing a “✖︎” at the person in the center. Those around have no ill intentions. They are not being mean. They are simply following the correct steps of their work quietly. When you try to tell someone what is right, no matter how correct it is, the way you do it can become an attack. Depending on the situation of the receiver, it can be either medicine or poison. In this painting, the person at the center does not receive it with a good feeling; they are wrapped up in the correctness of others and almost become a monstrous figure. The person in the center has lost themselves, wrapped too much by others’ opinions, to the point of not even wanting to think anymore. What will this creature do next? There are times when, even if you want to, it is difficult to accept or receive from others. It is important to separate facts from your emotions and consider how to handle correctness and direct it toward others. This reflection was the starting point of this painting.

タイトルは少し読みづらいですが、✖︎は日本語で「BATSU（バツ、もしくはバッテン）」と読みます。絵の中には編み物をしている人たちがおり、その真ん中には、周りが編んだものをぐるぐると体に巻いて座る者がいます。編み物では、工程で編み棒をクロスさせることがあります。一人で編んでいるなら気になりませんが、複数人で輪を作り中央の人に向かって編むと、まるで複数の人が一人に「✖︎」を突きつけているように見えることがあります。周りの人々に悪意はありません。意地悪をしているわけでもありません。ただ正しい工程を黙々と行っているだけです。正しいことを相手に伝える時、それがどんなに正しくても、伝え方次第で攻撃になりえます。受け取る側の状況によっては薬にも毒にもなるのです。この絵では、中央の人物はそれを良い感情で受け取らず、周りの正しさに巻かれて化け物のようになってしまいました。周囲の意見に巻かれすぎて自分を見失い、考えることすらやめたくなった化け物は、この後どのような行動をとるのでしょうか。素直に受け取りたいと思っても、受け取るのが難しい時があります。事実と自分の感情を区別し、正しさをどう扱い他者に向けるかを考えること。それがこの絵の出発点になった思いです。
