Bio

I’m Johanna Rämänen, a 27-year-old self-taught artist originally from a small village in Kris-tinestad, located on the west coast of Finland. I grew up surrounded by nature, which has huge-ly impacted my art and how I view the world. As a child I always loved to draw and paint with different media, but as I grew older, I got more into photography and my interest in drawing and painting was hidden for several years. After high school, I moved to Turku, a city on the southwest coast of Finland, where I obtained a bachelor's degree in social sciences. For my master’s degree, I switched subject to International Business, in which I will graduate in about a year. Even though I thought my life was on track, there was something missing, I just didn’t know what. I started to struggle with mental health issues, and just before I got diagnosed with de-pression, I found an old oil painting set for beginners, in the storage at my childhood home. I had got it as a Christmas gift when I was a child. I started to paint, and my severe anxiety imme-diately relieved. It was like something clicked. It was this I was supposed to do. I felt liberated, without any stress in the world. Since then, I have not laid down my brush. I have been painting ever since, and I have truly found my passion in life. I am certain that my passion for painting was always hidden inside me, it just took some time for me to find it. I work with oil paint, a medium that fits perfectly for me. In my works, I strive to capture small moments of the present, of what-ever that might be. It can be a feeling, such as euphoria or anxiety, or a soothing landscape in the Finnish countryside in a realistic style. Therefore, I am not strictly tied to neither an abstract nor a figurative style. I boldly experiment, and that brings me joy and a sense of fulfilment.
