Description: Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), Mexican artist, today a symbol of resistance and a feminist icon, even though she herself did not define herself as a narrative. She constructed herself and her aesthetic as a work of art—her eyebrows joined together, her loose, bright dresses and flowers; sometimes she wore men's clothing, using her image to assert a vision. In her works, she favored self-portraiture and depicted images of life and death, like a sort of visual diary. She turned her pain into an art form; she hid nothing and used her body as a language, her broken body, marked by illness and injury, which would never stand in the way of living a full life; her exposed heart, as an icon of suffering, referencing the tradition of Mexican churches. In her works, she represented not only herself, but also the essence of womanhood, radical and alive.
