Turning Twenty - My Story Begins in White: 二十歳 - 白から始まる私の物語
2025
Info
Technique: Natural tree bark flowers, natural gemstones (including rhodochrosite, green amethyst, crystal, and pearls), gold wire, mizuhiki cords, fabric, decorative metal accessories, and mixed media.
Inspired by the creation of traditional Japanese coming-of-age (furisode) hair ornaments, this work reflects the deeply personal dialogue between a mother and her daughter. During the creative process, the artist carefully considers the wearer’s preferred colors, kimono, hairstyle, favorite flowers, and meaningful materials, while two wishes are heard time and again: “I want white flowers” and “I want something unlike anyone else’s.” These requests become expressions of individuality, self-affirmation, and the desire to celebrate a once-in-a-lifetime milestone with confidence and authenticity.
The handcrafted white flowers symbolize the blessings of a mother, the quiet hopes of a daughter, and the emotions that are often too delicate to express in words. Every flower and gemstone has been chosen for its symbolic meaning, creating a visual language that speaks of renewal, gratitude, happiness, inner strength, love, independence, and personal growth. The accessories incorporated into the composition, including the obidome, earrings, and brooch, represent the daughter’s first steps toward adulthood and the determination to walk her own path while carrying with her the love and support of her family.
Through carefully selected natural materials and symbolic elements, the work celebrates individuality, new beginnings, and the enduring bonds between generations.
