Description
The work represents the carnal relationship between a tortoise and a young woman. The reptile is an animal that in Christian iconography has always represented evil, the incarnation of man's atavistic fear. The animal is in stark contrast to the girl, a Madonna, a symbol of purity and beauty. The female subject is not violated by the beast, but on the contrary is in ecstasy because of it. Symbolically, the work represents facing one's fears, learning to accept them and being able to live with them. The black lines are thick and composed of various areas of shadow, the bright pastel colors serve to highlight the surrealistic aspect of the work. The artwork was inspired by the majestic works done by Japanese artists Katsushika Hokusai, Suehiro Maruo, Toshio Saeki
