Unlike many of my portrait paintings, I more fully conceived the final look from the start. Previously I had done different versions of a woman in the posture of holding a rifle that was not there. While there can be different interpretations of what this might mean, the one that speaks to me involves the way entire sections of people are treated as invisible until those moments they break through making their existance impossible to ignore. The Modern dress of the woman with both an urban and mountainous landscape is a symbol of how this dynamic exists in all parts of the world.
