Zeng Yuling
Painter
Bio
Zeng Yuling was born in 1994, and currently lives and works in Beijing, China. She has received her BFA and MFA in Oil Painting in 2017 and 2019 from the Repin Academy of Fine Art, Russia. While working as a full-time oil-painting teacher in an institution for adult education, Zeng never stops pursuing her own artistic career. During her time in Repin Academy of Fine Art, Zeng has been experimenting with a wide range of practices, from traditional oil painting to digital art, from basic sketches of still-lifes to refined portraits —- her school training has equipped her with outstanding painting skills. Though trained as a traditional realism painter, Zeng finds her devotion in abstract art. Zeng’s frequent visits to world-leading museums has given her considerable insights into the art field, beyond what the curriculum has offered. She gradually finds out that everyone can paint extremely lifelike as long as they have put enough effort and training. However, what is missing is that not every artist is able to fully convey their thoughts behind. This belief motivated Zeng to dissociate her genuinely inner expressions from perfectly advanced techniques. It is abstract art that allows her to concentrate on the self and nourishes her artistic path. Zeng started her abstract journey by using watercolors and ink. Nonetheless, it would be hard to disagree that the strong emotions contained in oil paintings cannot be replaced. The tangible texture of oil paints, along with the subtle gradations of light and shade, adds to the aura of her images’ emotional tension. Zeng’s works are greatly influenced by her tender observation of the self and society. Zeng’s painting is recognizable by her use of the bold palette as well as the atmospheric and contemplative surreal scenes. With each brushstroke, she experiences with her own body the components that form the artistic language and how every brushstroke and every tint of colors can be reassembled to express her way of seeing. The result is a visual experience that draws viewers into her energetic realm of art, evoking a certain sense of introspection.
There are no boundaries or answers in Art, my works are all expressions of abstract art and it is a great challenge to express my thoughts and "me". Also, I think I'm a contradictory and self-denying person, so the biggest challenge for me is in the process. It's like a "self-confrontation game" for me: I constantly ask myself questions and then answer my inner voice. There won't be voices besides mine. If I don't believe in myself, my work will no longer be mine and I don't need it call me more artist. The artistic process must be a journey to harden my ego, and luckily I can clearly feel that my "ego" is becoming more and more solid, and I can now affirm it with confidence thanks to this painting process, which is measured over the years, the my "ego" guided me and brought me great changes. Choice and abandonment is a balance that only I can decide: perception and life. Faced with these self-doubts and the challenge of the painting itself, the process of creation is my search for answers and for myself.
