Bio

Katria Lee is a visual artist from Hong Kong, whose work is inspired by metropolitan life and how reality often warps to become surreal in urban settings. The Fish Bowl City collection explores how densely populated cities itself feels like a fish bowl containing multitudes, trapping each person with their own desires and materialistic needs, longing to be freed. The inspiration came from a place in Hong Kong called Goldfish Street, which is full of aquarium stores, with myriads of colourful fish in plastic bags, tanks and glass bowls all stacked on top of each other, forming such a sight it became a tourist attraction. Whenever visitors stand behind the bags and the fish bowls, it looks as if their heads have been replaced, and to the artist, it almost feels like an ironic allegory symbolising the larger condition of the city. Thus, this series portrays the artist’s interpretation of people seeking dreams and freedoms larger than the limited reality they have been given.
