Serhii Kalahur
Digital Artist
Bio
Born in Kadiivka, Luhansk region, Ukraine (1987), now based in Kyiv. With a background in 3D graphics and visual design, I developed my practice outside of academic art institutions, moving from experiments with digital tools and analog painting to a personal language that merges photography, glitch aesthetics, and obsession with architecture. My work is rooted in black-and-white glitch photography, where architecture becomes both a structure and a portrait of collective character. I use mobile photography, negative conversion, and collage with 3D elements to build fractured cityscapes that reflect the atmosphere of despair, death, and displacement brought by war. All my images are unique and real some visualize distortions of perception, while others depict buildings already scarred by destruction, forming a monochrome background of hopelessness. I study the balance between perfect symmetry and absolute deformation, much like Dalí explored the tension between the soft and solid state of matter. In my works, concrete can appear as fragile and pliable as it is rigid and immovable, becoming both shelter and threat. Glitch here is more than a technique it is a visual record of how perception collapses under the weight of trauma, while architecture itself embodies both resilience and ruin.
Artist's statement:
I want to strike a balance between classical methods and techniques in art and modern dynam-ics of digitalization progress. And sometimes a simple mobile phone, like mine, can be powerful enough to help reach this goal and make people open their minds and eyes wider. I consider myself as an underground digital futuristic warrior or just a skilled pretender that wants to show people that you do not have to be born super talented or gifted to be a creator. You just need to have a great wish of learning skills to create something. We are living in the world of arrays of mistakes in almost every sphere of our life. So, I decided to choose a direction that is based on-ly on visual & algorithm defects and mistakes, because there is only one cradle for balance and harmony, which is - chaos.'
