Beginning his life in Bay City, Michigan, Jay Handy’s journey into the world of art has been winding. From foster care during his teens to attending the Harvard Business School and most recently, graduating from the Lesley University College of Art and Design, Jay’s artwork draws on a lifetime of treading new paths. A printmaker specializing in etching and chine collé, Jay Handy’s process yields a dreamlike quality that permeates his artwork. Describing the philosophy behind his work, Handy has said “My art is an exploration of memory, both in its function and its feeling. When we think back on a memory, it’s never quite the same as the initial experience that it was born of—a unique and complicated aura now surrounds it.” Coming off the heels of an innovative solo-exhibition featuring community participation in the art-making process, Handy is now set to showcase his work at the Florence Biennale.
