In the other painting of this pair, the coloured version, I perform a spatial exchange with the shadow under the red table. However, in this one, it is simply the table's shadow, though I make the table and its shadow the same colour—black. I believe the shadow is also a primary object. The table and its shadow are each other's subject and accompaniment; both are subjects and also accompaniments, creating a connection between them.
