"Whoever looks at me will be transformed; my gaze is a force that changes everything it touches."
(Ovid, Metamorphoses, Book IV)
This quote reflects the idea of the influential power of Medusa's gaze, art, similarly, can have a profound impact on viewers and transform them forever.
"Look at Me: Medusa," explores the myth of Medusa, the gorgon cursed by Athena to transform her beauty into a terrible weapon. Medusa, once beautiful, is transformed as punishment by the Gods, her hair becomes snakes and her gaze is cursed, Medusa will turn to stone anyone who dares to look at her. This myth becomes a reflection on the power and impact of works of art and how they can transform and influence those who observe them.
Medusa is a powerful symbol when compared to art, demonstrating how art can exert a profound force on its viewers, transforming their perception and experience. The exhibition will explore how works of art have the power to change the way we see ourselves and the world.
"Look at Me: Medusa" becomes an investigation into how art influences and transforms the perception of viewers. The works exhibited will be selected for their ability to evoke strong reactions and reflections, similar to the petrifying effect of Medusa's gaze. Each artist will be invited to consider how their work can influence, shock or enlighten the observer.
In her sculpture "Maman," Bourgeois explores themes of fear and protection through the image of a giant spider. The work evokes a powerful response, similar to that which Medusa might elicit, influencing the viewer's perception and experience.
We invite artists to reflect on the power of transformation through art. "Look at Me: Medusa" is an opportunity to explore how works can influence and transform the perception of those who view them. Each artist is encouraged to consider how their work can evoke strong reactions, reflections and transformations in the experience of the observer.
