Bio

Halyna Dolynna, aka Flower Fly, is a self-taught Ukrainian artist based in Lviv with a unique, easily recognisable personal style. She conveys her experiences and inner state of being by weaving her own universe. Some images that seem simple and manageable at first glance hold chaos and darkness the longer you look. They, like a refrain, travel from one painting to another, evoking a feeling of deep sleep – her sleep. The viewer is immersed in her world, having no choice but to follow her dream to the end, which is always unexpected. The artist plays with colours and stops only when she finds peace. Yet, whatever she explores, you can sense a mystical element. It haunts you for hours, and you return to the painting to find it. And fail again, for this elusive element you cannot grasp by merely perceiving the painting as a viewer. And there is the trick. This magic, this elusiveness, is not in the painting but in the emotional state it puts you in, acting as a door into the subconscious. The compelling beauty of the artist's paintings is that you are never a contemplator but an explorer.
Her personal exhibits held in Lviv have evoked much interest. She is currently preparing two exhibits, one of which is devoted to her soon to be published novel, Roofless House.

“All my life, I've been drawing women's faces on anything I could find. People around me said I was crazy as the number of sketches was really quite enormous: any piece of paper, any napkin was covered by as many faces as possible. Sometimes, faces overlapped and it was interesting to see how images created themselves. And then I said to myself: that's enough – go and paint like normal people! And so I did – I bought canvases, paints and brushes. But, I still doubt that I paint like most normal people. The paintings presented here will be included in the exhibit dedicated to my novel which is all about my artistic experience – it's mystical and psychological, a kind of quest where the truth is found at the end. But you know, everyone has their own truth. Including my paintings.”
