Looking at the small islands scattered across the vast expanse of water, there was a feeling of loneliness. But in Venice, this would be considered a lagoon. Sometimes, when I took a ferry-boat to the northern islands, I would first go to the Fondamente Nove stop on the northern side of Venice to transfer to another ferry-boat. The same route applied on the way back. Yet, whenever I returned, I couldn’t help but glance back at the lagoon. The lagoon is immense, making one feel small and insignificant. I imagined myself sitting there—perhaps I truly once sat there—gazing out at the tiny islands scattered across the vast lagoon, feeling a profound emptiness.
