Description:
This is the only pair of paintings among the twenty that depicts a location in the UK. My mom's good friend moved to Reading, England, for a while because her husband was studying for his doctorate degree there. Unlike typical English bungalows, which are usually one house per family unit, the school dormitories were two units per house, with one unit per floor. My mom's friend's family was assigned the first floor of one of these bungalows, while another student and his family lived on the ground floor. One summer, my mom took my brother and me to visit them, and the seven of us lived in that small house (floor) for two weeks. At first, we felt strange, and felt everywhere narrow and cramped, but we got used to it over time and even found space to play hide-and-seek. In the painting, there is a staircase on the left side leading up to this space. The red and yellow parts represent doors that lead to the bedroom and the kitchen, respectively, while the blue represents the exterior wall of the bathroom. The colour scheme was chosen to create a sense of progression inward. Additionally, since I felt that red and yellow are quite similar in tone, I placed blue between them to create balance.
