Description
The city lights shone brightly across the water, yet the lagoon remained dark and cold. Sitting alone in a deserted corner, I felt loneliness, solitude, and emptiness. I gazed at the brightly lit city across the way, though even those distant lights gradually faded into silence. Venice is made up of many small islands, mostly divided into two sides by the Grand Canal. When I studied there, I lived on one side, but I often walked to a quiet corner on the other side. From there, I could see where I lived—it was just two or three ferry-boat stops away. But walking around meant taking a long detour, about 40 minutes. Still, I preferred to walk, because the more I walked, the quieter it became, until in the end, I was the only one left.
