Bio

Santina Mastrangelo A reoccurring exploration of abstracted outcomes that incorporates the concept of layering can be seen amongst my work, as it explores the concepts of both physical and personal journeys with a take on contemporary collaging. Through collaging I’m reinterpreting and reprocessing the collective past, present and future being the perfect medium for our time, reflecting the surrounding world we live in. This branches into cultural factors that leads to the self-discovery of a better understanding towards the topic of identity. Furthermore, I am intrigued by effects of the arts on the mind, looking into ‘Psychogeography’ and the effects of locations on emotions and behaviors of people, specifically how they interact and respond to spaces. This also involved exploring the dual relationship between people and landscape, drawing on connections to places meaningful to myself and how that in turn impacts my identity. My work is comprised through layers of images, texts and marks in relation to a journey both short terms, to a certain destination or time period, and long term, the journey of life. I combine these elements in my outcomes through layering to capture an ultimate image that represents a final composition of a journey, which in turn I see as an abstracted self-portrait, as all the aspects of your identity are drawn out in the work. The subject of memory also plays alongside this and centralizes the sub-context of my work, looking at personal and public memories, with reactions to landscapes, as well as memory as a trace and as a role of archive.
