THE SILENCE ZONE

沈黙の領域

17 09 2026

Concept by Lisa Galletti Senior Art Curator

There are moments when the noise of the world seems to recede without anything having truly ceased to happen. The hours move forward, the light changes across the walls, people pass through the streets, and objects remain in the rooms exactly where we left them, yet perception suddenly seems to withdraw from all this movement. It is as though, for a moment, that subtle urgency that constantly drives us toward something begins to dissolve, allowing things to exist freely without needing to be immediately understood. A glass forgotten on the table slowly gathers the afternoon light, a curtain moves gently before a half-open window, a chair still preserves the invisible shape of the person who has just risen from it. Nothing has truly changed, yet everything appears different, because when the noise diminishes, even what once seemed insignificant begins to acquire an intensity of its own. Silence is born within this slight displacement, in the moment when reality continues to unfold and consciousness, for a few moments, stops chasing after it.

And inevitably, this suspension also changes the way we look. We are accustomed to quickly recognizing what lies before us and giving names to things, connecting them to something we already know, continuously constructing a narrative capable of orienting our experience. When this narrative slows down, forms remain before our eyes for longer and begin to possess a different duration. A face may retain something indecipherable, an object may lose its function and simply become a presence again, an image may remain open without immediately asking for an explanation. Perception then becomes slower and more precise, almost as though it had to relearn how to distinguish what we normally pass through without seeing. It is within this expanded attention that silence begins to reveal its depth, because what seemed absent can slowly become perceptible again. What emerges, then, are thoughts that remained without words, images that never found a place, emotions that remained suspended and can finally resurface without following any precise sequence. The past enters the present through fragments, details, sensations that seemed lost and return with unexpected precision. It is like opening a room that has remained closed for a long time and discovering that the air still carries the scent of the things that were left there. For a moment, consciousness is released from the need to organize and conclude, allowing it to observe what emerges without forcing it to immediately become an answer. What remains when we stop asking things to have a meaning? The possibility of listening to them in their ambiguity, of allowing a sensation to exist before becoming a definition, of allowing a question to continue living without being reduced to its solution.

It is precisely here that art encounters silence. Artworks can hold what language tends to fix too quickly, allowing an image to remain suspended, a gesture to continue suggesting movement, a form to preserve something not yet fully expressed. The gaze can pause, return, lose its direction for a moment and begin again from a detail. The artwork thus becomes a temporal experience before it becomes a visual one, because it requires duration, openness, a form of attention capable of accepting that meaning may arrive slowly. Within this experience, even emptiness acquires a function: the space between two elements, the silence between two images, the interval separating one presence from another become part of perception and allow the artwork to continue beyond what it shows.

THE SILENCE ZONE – 沈黙の領域 emerges from this need to slow down, gathering the moment in which movement has quieted and what remains can finally be observed without being immediately reassembled. M.A.D.S. understands the exhibition as a time devoted to perception, memory, and everything that emerges when consciousness momentarily relinquishes its incessant search for answers. The artworks inhabit this suspension, allowing meaning to take shape slowly through associations, memories, and sensations that surface without following a predetermined direction. There remains the time necessary to look at what is present, to listen to what has not yet found a form, and to allow each image to preserve a part of its indeterminacy. Silence thus becomes a form of attention, and the space that at first appeared empty reveals itself as inhabited by everything that haste had rendered invisible.
