Biography
Sumihiko Taniguchi was born in 1969 in Ibaraki City, Osaka Prefecture. His parents come from Tajima, in Hyōgo Prefecture, a rural area historically known for both the production of Tajima beef and its prosperity; in ancient times, during the Sengoku period, the region functioned as a weapons storage area.

From early childhood, Taniguchi showed a strong inclination toward observing insects and living organisms, preferring this to playing with neighborhood children. He spent much of his time immersed in nature, swimming, interacting with animals, and developing a deep sensitivity toward life forms.

During his elementary school years, he became passionately interested in automobile design, especially Italian and German carrozzeria styling. On holidays, he would draw car shapes meticulously, often working through the night until morning. Academic studies failed to capture his attention, but drawing remained a constant focus. From late elementary school through middle school, he was particularly devoted to drawing nude figures of the Hong Kong action star Bruce Lee.

In high school, he began training in karate, paying his tuition by working as a newspaper delivery boy. He also joined the volleyball team to build physical strength. At the same time, he developed a strong interest in high fashion; during his final year of high school, he spent the equivalent of approximately ¥500,000 annually on clothing.

After graduation, he enrolled at Osaka Mode Gakuen, where he studied the fundamentals of design intensively for one year before leaving the program. Through an introduction from a close friend, he began working in the hospitality industry, training as a hotel and French restaurant service professional. He remained in this field until the age of twenty-seven.

Following his resignation, he pursued a career in imported car sales, turning a personal passion into a profession. Deeply affected by the experience of the Great Hanshin Earthquake, he chose to leave corporate life altogether. After working for one year at a factory in Aichi Prefecture, he moved to Tokyo.

For approximately fifteen years, Taniguchi worked as an actor in film and stage productions. He was involved not only as a performer but also as a playwright, director, producer, and lead actor, staging short theatrical works in underground pubs and small theater spaces.

After retiring from acting, he returned to painting, spending a year selling his artworks on the streets of Tokyo. A move to Minato Ward marked the beginning of a more serious and focused study of painting. He later relocated to Yokohama’s Naka Ward, where he lived for a year while working as a road paving laborer. During this period, he frequently traveled to Shōnan and made regular weekend stays at Nabeta Beach on the Izu Peninsula.

He began receiving commissions for paintings mounted on hanging scrolls, leading to the creation of two fully realized works. After suffering a severe back injury, he relocated permanently to Shimoda City on the Izu Peninsula.

There, surrounded by the sea, Taniguchi devoted himself to the study and development of traditional Japanese painting techniques. His work centers on the sea, flowers, living creatures, and human figures, using Kyoto-style gansai pigments, mineral pigments, and sumi ink within a Yamato-e framework. While intermittently working in the hospitality industry, he continued his artistic practice, occasionally pausing but never abandoning his research.

From April 2026, he began independently studying stone sculpture, carefully balancing physical rehabilitation, particularly shoulder care, with technical experimentation. He has since dedicated his life entirely to the creation of stone sculptural forms.
