CRINGE

IN A WORLD FULL OF BASIC

In the great theatre of humanity, the artists considered cringe, eccentric, uncomfortable, out of tune, are often the ones who have pressed the secret keys of change.

There are works that still speak with a strong and valid voice because they pushed us, and continue to push us, to see farther.

Caravaggio. His “Saint Matthew and the Angel” was rejected for being too human, too raw, too close to the flesh of the street. Or “The Death of the Virgin”, judged indecent because the Madonna looked like a real woman, her face marked by life. Caravaggio lived like a fugitive, a man chased by his own shadows. Yet this very marginality shattered the idea of a sterile sacred and introduced a new grammar.

Van Gogh. “Starry Night” goes beyond the common perception of the night sky. His representations are not faithful to what we see but reinterpret it, taking into account the emotional perception of the world. Van Gogh was not only out of place in society, he was out of place even within his artistic era. No one understood his obsession with color, with matter curling on the canvas like a feverish feeling. And yet he rewrote modern sensibility, almost teaching us to look into the inner depth of things.

Then there is Frida Kahlo, with “The Broken Column”. Her wounded body, her life of pain and struggle were considered cumbersome, embarrassing. But Frida brought something cosmic into art. Fragility as a form of knowledge. Suffering as language. Her being out of the norm became an emotional atlas for generations.

Episodes like these reveal a truth that is almost scandalous. Marginality is often the place where new perception is born. The world tends to fear what it does not recognise. The artist instead inhabits that space and turns it into language. It is as if their exclusion produced a form of clarity, a different way of thinking about reality. We could say that the artist does not simply observe the world. They recreate it. They cross it with an open wound. And through that wound the light enters.

Bring what you discovered in the moments when you felt out of tune with the general melody. Because it is always the unclassifiable ones who change the rhythm of the world.
