“Sensha-fuda” is an abbreviation of “Sensha-mairi-no-tafuda,” which was traditionally used to pray for safety in the world and the well-being of one’s family. During the Edo period (1603–1867), people began pasting paper fuda with their names and hometowns written on them at torii (gateways to shrines and temples) and fuda-sho (places where fuda are deposited). This practice also served as a proof of their visit and as a way to pray for good fortune when coming from the countryside. Some shrines and temples are designated as important cultural properties, and in certain places, this practice is now prohibited. It is necessary to confirm whether affixing a fuda is allowed and to obtain permission beforehand.
