Bio

Rasia Friedler is a Uruguayan contemporary visual artist and psychologist.
In her aesthetic exploration she integrates photography, drawing, painting and collage. As a mixed media visual artist she has an experimental approach. Friedler rescues subtle aspects from the incessant flow of events to delve into them and reveal new meanings. She is attracted to what the passage of time produces in people and materials. Her eye slides into the grooves that time makes in the faces, towards the cracked walls and the rusted materials. She experiences the freedom to create and find beauty even in loss, decay and wear. The passage of time, the paradoxes of subjectivity and the complexity of the human condition in contemporary society are recurring issues in her work. Her focus on the subtle produces sensible transformations in the observer's gaze. The subjects of her works range from contemporary portraits and scenes to abstracts. She has a special interest in minimalism and the intersection of disciplinary boundaries in creative processes. Her artistic work is closely linked to her performances in other areas. She is a psychologist and has also published essays, literary and humorous texts. Humor occupies an important place alongside Art as a tool for healing and social transformation. She was co-founder and co-director of the Free Chair of Art and Psycholo-gy at the University of the Republic. THE HUMOR OF LIFE was the subject of her conference at TEDx Punta del Este in 2013. She participated as founder and director of SaludArte, an organization with more than 20 years of experience for Health Promotion through Art and Humor. Playback Thea-ter has also been present in the artist's work. She has carried out workshops, installations, participa-tory shows, exhibitions, conferences and experiential encounters. In her vast journey she has explored the intersections between writing, painting, photography, theater, dance, psychology and technology. Her art transcends to different areas inside and outside her country. Rasia's creations have been pre-sent in unconventional spaces, such as Robotics events organized by the University of the Republic, Mola (Latin American Sustainable Fashion Event) and hospital centers. Her works have participated in international exhibitions representing Uruguay on several occasions, and they are part of private collections nationally and internationally.
