Bio

Carrie McIntyre I paint colour-based abstract work in a series of evolving styles, using primarily acrylic and mixed media on canvas. My work can be placed historically in the traditions of mid-century abstraction. Colour and movement are the foundations of my technical practice. My process begins with layering colour on top of colour in quick successive brush strokes to create a sense movement. This mark-making is both spontaneous and practiced, and as the kinetic brush strokes express a mood, the formal elements of the painting emerge. Although I paint across multiple abstract styles, my colour palette is the fundamental ground that unites all my work and is unique to me. Each painting is an expression of powerful feelings in my own life, but never on a conscious level—In this way my work is representational, but of an emotional and psychological space. I prefer not to over-determine the meaning of each piece by trying to communicate this personal story in a literal or semiotic mode. Rather, my work is expressive: each canvas is an index of my kinetic, emotional expression.
