Ben Sheppee (b.1978, Bristol, UK) is a graphic fine artist based in London. Below the surface of Sheppee’s signature typographic designs is an inquiry into the role of communication, where a work of art is more than an object of admiration. His practice is an investigative process, where he deconstructs alphanumeric forms, forces errors, and explores the aesthetics that live there. His compositions embody his internal state and the impermanence of the world around him. Exploring themes such as language, miscommunication, and in-articulation, Sheppee’s practice forges connections between art, design, technology and philosophy. In addition to his involvement at some prestigious shows at some renowned art institutions (including Tate Britain, British Museum and National Portrait Gallery) Sheppee has carved a path for himself as a curator as well as an artist. During his 10 year tenure living in San Francisco, Tokyo and Paris, Sheppee published over 250 film based works by over 70 artists under the title “Lightrhythm Visuals”, which took VJ art into screening and exhibition spaces internationally, bringing awareness to that movement. Understanding the connection between technology and art, Sheppee has also acted as an art director, collaborating with some of the largest names in the music industry, working for iconic acts such as Dua Lipa, JayZ and Ellie Goulding, developing stage designs and visual contents for large shows. His key passion however remains the feedback and dialogue with the viewer that is realized through exhibiting his work as a graphic fine artist in gallery spaces.

Statement
My work is an inquiry into communication, where I deconstruct the elements of language, force errors, and explore the aesthetics that live there in the search for new meanings and interpretations. My compositions embody my internal battle with expression, aiming to overcome the limitations of written language which can become misconstrued, misinterpreted and often fail to convey its true meaning.
