Description
“Sometimes, I start by colouring the most complex part, the area with the most structural intersections. In this painting, that would be where the flowerbed and the doorframe intersect. Since the flowerbed is just one scene in this picture and not the main focus, I depict it using mid-tone greys to avoid making the colours too strong. Then, I think about which parts connected to the flowerbed can be emphasised with black. Once the placement of black is determined, I can decide on the white areas. After these decisions are made, I move on to the second most complex part, which is the staircase on the right side. The considerations for the staircase are similar to those for the flowerbed: since it is a complex object, I try to present it using grey tones. Additionally, the brushstrokes should give a sense of the staircase ascending upward.”
