Title: Kim
Year: 2013
Size: 20"x16"
Technique: Oils and mixed media on wood panel. Using a giclee of a more traditional portrait of Kim I had previously done I glued the canvas image to a panel and ripped, scratched, pasted, and painted over it.

Originally, I painted Kim as a traditional portrait. Three years later I transferred the image, mounted it on a panel, and then proceeded to tear, scratch, paint and paste over the original to create a portrait in my new style. With this kind of approach, I try and express not just what I understood of the individual's features but also their character. That I had friendships with many of my subjects helped inform my imagination. Kim posted this painting as her FB cover photo. Its popularity helped encourage me to continue doing this kind of portraiture.
