Bio
Leïla Labelle is mixed media artist from Montreal, Canada, with nearly twenty years of gallery representation, the artist exhibited her work in Canada, New York, France, Italy and Morocco fall 2025. In school she had a great interest in painting, sculpture, antique textiles and pottery, which led her to studied Fashion designing and several workshops of sculpture, jewelry design and ceramics. The artist studied Chinese calligraphy, the art of Chinese painting and workshops of Organic Color: Tinting Washi paper with Natural Dyes. For Leïla next chapter in her artistic journey, she is excited to realize a long-held dream of dividing her time between Montreal, Canada, and Tangier, Morocco. Morocco’s rich culture, its traditions, history, has long inspired and fascinated the artist. Leïla is very committed to giving back a portion of her proceeds in Morocco of her art and textile collection be donated to the SFT Animal Sanctuary in Tangier, an organization she greatly admires for its tireless efforts in animal welfare. Leila evolves, as an artist, through series, which started in the Arctic and journeyed through Africa, Asia and the Orient. The artist became inspired by Japan's iconic antique kimonos, the mystic world of a Geisha and Courtesans of the Edo period during the ruling of the Samurai. The creation of her kimono's, traditional costumes and sculptures, are created with handmade washi paper. This series requires many hours of confection and research, which became her signature. Her many creative experiences can be seen and felt in her paintings. The artist finds her true inspiration when travelling, in photography, being in nature, exploring different techniques, researching the history of 'The Silk Road'. The artist uses techniques of photography thats woven with her art. Her paintings can also includes ancient scrips, calligraphy and old poems to tell her story. To create her story the artist uses various techniques and materials. The texture is made to give the illusion of old fresco's and old wallpaper, aged by the passage of time. Many coats of washi are worked in rising intensity in her colour choice, sometimes subdued or flamboyant. She embeds collage materials that she finds in the most random of places she travels and handmade papers from around the world. Her love for the magical colour Indigo which fascinates the world since many centuries, guides her to many creatives journeys.
