The exhibition “ Soul mirror: Reflections of Self and the Other” invites contemporary artists to explore the theme of self- perception through the encounter with the other. In a world that is increasingly interconnected yet fragmented, this exhibition aims to investigate how personal identity develops, transforms, and is reflected in interaction with otherness.
The title itself evokes the concept of the mirror, a recurring symbol in the history of art as a tool for introspection and confrontation. From Jan van Eyck, with the convex mirror in the renowned Arnolfini Portrait, to the self- portraits of Frida Kahlo, where personal suffering intertwines with a profound search for the self, the mirror represents not only an object but also a bridge to the other and a vehicle for inner dialogue. Similarly, the art of Cindy Sherman and Gillian Wearing explores the construction of identity through masks and roles, challenging the viewer to reconsider the boundaries between self and other.
Through various disciplines – painting, sculpture, photography, multimedia installations, and performance – artists are invited to interpret how the other can act as a mirror, influencing the perception of oneself. What role does the external gaze play in defining who we are? How do the boundaries between individual and collective identity evolve? “ Mirrors of the Soul” encourages reflection on these questions through works that reflect the uniqueness of human experience while uniting us in the common search for meaning.
The goal of the exhibition is to create a space where multiple perspectives meet and reflect, giving rise to an open and inclusive dialogue. Whether it is a self- portrait looking inward or a work exploring social dynamics, every contribution will be a piece that enriches this complex reflection on the human being.
