My name is João Vargues, I was born in Lisbon but lived in a small town called Faro, which is the capital of the Algarve in Portugal until 2015. I studied Visual arts at the University of Algarve (Ualg) for 2 years, and for the third year of the course I moved to England to finish the last year as an exchange student at the University of Wolverhampton, and l have been living in England ever since.

My style is abstract expressionism, which stems from a sense of urgency and a need to express emotions, thoughts and feelings through abrupt, fluid movements and with the intention of creating a composition using contrasting colours, space and deconstruction of the image. I prefer to use large canvases, so I can use the strength of my whole body to paint, the fluidity of my movement often being influenced by music in a kind of frenetic dance. I like to paint quickly, spontaneously and in an expressive and unconscious way.
