The concept of tears representing the wounds of the Virgin Mary, often referred to as the “Seven Sorrows of Mary,” is a significant aspect of Catholic devotion and spirituality. According to tradition, these seven sorrows include events in the life of Mary, such as the prophecy of Simeon, the flight into Egypt, and the crucifixion of Jesus.
In artistic representations, in painting, tears take on profound symbolic significance beyond just indicating personal sorrow. When Mary is depicted shedding tears, especially in scenes depicting Jesus' crucifixion or other moments of his suffering, it serves to convey her profound empathy and solidarity with the pain and struggles of humanity.
Through devotion to the Seven Sorrows of Mary, swords piercing her heart symbolize each of the seven sorrows she endured throughout her life, as foretold by the prophecy of Simeon. These sorrows include events such as the prophecy of Simeon, the flight into Egypt, the loss of the child Jesus in the Temple, the meeting of Mary and Jesus on the road to Calvary, and the crucifixion of Jesus, among others. Seven Sorrows of Mary, believers reflect on the depth of Mary's love and sacrifice, finding solace and inspiration in her example of faithfulness and endurance in the face of adversity.
