Eva Laila Hilsen's practice moves within a delicate balance of abstraction and figuration, where the recurring motif of the house serves as both image and allegory. Over the years, this essential form has shifted from solitary emblem to communal presence, at times vulnerable, at times unshakable. It is never a simple structure, but a mirror of human experience, a vessel of memory and existence. Her language combines the clarity of strict frontal forms with the fluidity of washes, drips and incisive lines. Colour is central: complementary hues and subtle contrasts evoke states of tension, fragility, resilience and light. Inspiration flows from nature's rhythms, the order and disorder of branches, the movement of light, the landscapes of Norway and beyond, filtered into a visual vocabulary at once rigorous and poetic. Across painting, printmaking, drawing and artist's books, Hilsen develops a coherent exploration where the house becomes both image and metaphor: an enduring sign of presence, rooted in place yet open to transformation.
