Sun Screen begins with a simple question: Where does the color go when we try to erase it? Inspired by the moment in Pleasantville when a woman covers the color that has emerged on her face with gray makeup, I shifted my attention away from the act of concealment and toward what remained. I stained paper towels with watercolor, imagining them as vessels that had absorbed the color she attempted to wipe away. Rather than becoming discarded remnants, they became quiet witnesses—holding the evidence of a transformation that could no longer be undone. I photographed these painted fragments on canvas and layered the images into translucent planes, creating a visual screen through which the viewer must look. Color gathers around the edges while the center returns to a muted gray, recalling the impulse to conceal what has awakened within us. The layered surfaces suggest both protection and obstruction, revealing and obscuring at the same time. This work is a reflection on the tension between authenticity and acceptance. We often hide the parts of ourselves that signal change, believing they make us vulnerable. Yet what has truly awakened cannot be erased; it simply finds another place to exist. The color remains—in memory, in material, and in the traces we leave behind.
