“Calm and excited” was an exercise in showing how mark and colour direct mood and feeling. The wavy marks imitate our childhood drawings of sea which is calm and calming, while the col-ours lime green close to the magenta adds friction and excitement. The spot pattern adds play-fulness. If you look at the painting in a horizontal angle it seems calmer than if you turn the painting 90 degrees and it looks like flames rising - which adds a different energy. The middle darker patterns have a much more sober less playful feeling.
