This is the gas meter that sits between my grandfather’s house and Mrs. Wang’s house next door. The space in the image is the storefront overhang on my grandfather’s side. Mrs. Wang once told me that, during the day, she would often step outside to chat with my grandfather. But when a cold front rolled in and the air turned bitter, they would each close the overhead doors to their homes—yet still, they spoke to each other through the narrow gap in the gas meter.
To me, the gas meter feels like a quiet bridge between two worlds. Light from the space behind it filters softly through, spilling into the foreground, as if carrying traces of warmth, conversation, and connection. Even in silence, it holds a memory of voices passing through.
