Bio

Sophia Openshaw is a Brooklyn based 2D visual artist. She received her BFA in illustration from Syracuse University in 2015 and recently completed an MFA from LIU Brooklyn. As an Autistic Italian-American woman, Sophia is specifically interested in using her art to explore the intersec-tion between psychology and spiritualism.
As an artist, I strive to use my work to tell stories that can connect us all emotionally and across boundaries of space and time. Lately, I have felt the pull to tell stories that challenge the exi-sting notion of secularity and authorship. These works are inspired by the twelfth century nun and mystic; Hildegard von Bingen. They are intended to explore the nature of the imaginational world that can be created within a confined space, while also examining the ways in which so called “Western” culture is engaged in a larger global discourse.
