Critical text by Silvia Grassi Art Curator:
Karin Monschauer's works exhibit a harmonious synergy between different artistic techniques, demonstrating how digital and traditional art can effectively dialogue.
The digital work “Kreissäge unendlich” represents a complex spiral of colors that expands indefinitely. The geometric composition is built through a series of colored isosceles triangles that repeat and interlock, creating an effect of continuous and hypnotic movement. The use of computer graphics allows Monschauer to explore vivid and precise color combinations that challenge the viewer's visual perception. The color range spans between warm and cool tones, with fluid transitions reminiscent of the art of Arabic ornamentation (raqm). The methodology of computer graphics allows for an impeccable level of detail and precision.
“Incanto,” on the other hand, is a work created with the gobelin needlepoint technique, highlighting the artist's manual skill. The composition is formed by a series of geometric patterns reminiscent of Middle Eastern carpet designs. Each element is meticulously embroidered, creating an intricate fabric of intersecting colors and shapes. The geometric structure of this work is characterized by repeating circular and square motifs, creating a visual rhythm and a sense of depth. The colors are saturated and well-defined, with a predominance of warm tones that give the piece a sense of warmth and welcome.
Despite the very different techniques, Monschauer's works dialogue with each other through the use of geometry and color. Both works show a strong attention to composition and chromatic harmony, although “Kreissäge unendlich” leverages digital precision while “Incanto” relies on the traditional manuality of needlework.
The connection between the two works lies in the artist's ability to create movement and dynamism through the repetition of geometric shapes. In “Kreissäge unendlich,” the effect of the infinite spiral captures the gaze and guides it through the work, while in “Incanto,” the repetitive motifs of circles and squares create a weaving effect that invites the viewer to explore every detail.
Karin Monschauer demonstrates great versatility in her artistic approach, ranging from digital art to painting, markers, and pastels. This technical diversity allows her to explore different expressive modalities while maintaining a stylistic coherence that is recognizable in all her works.
Digital works like “Kreissäge unendlich” benefit from the precision and wide range of colors offered by design software, while works created with traditional techniques like “Incanto” offer a tangibility and materiality that add depth and texture to the visual experience.
In conclusion, Karin Monschauer's works, although created with different techniques, show a profound connection. This harmony between past and present, between digital and traditional, makes her work particularly fascinating and innovative.
