In Taiwan, summer afternoons are often marked by afternoon thunderstorms. One such afternoon, I was walking to a student’s house while it was pouring rain. The raindrops from these storms are always large and heavy. I held my umbrella and watched the steady rhythm of the rain falling ahead of me. Each drop hit the pavement with a splash, bursting like tiny dancers—like piano keys being struck one after another, rising and falling in a scattered, musical rhythm.
