Legends, myths, folktales, and other tales are born and passed on wherever people live, and even now, while changing their forms, they leave something deep in our hearts and minds, in what might be called the unconscious. When we read myths, we can see traces of the movement of people in the past, and we can feel a common sense of what kind of thinking people used to do.
I do not believe that folk tales and folklore are now only found in folklore materials. I believe that the containers for generating stories still exist within us.
There is a story of a mermaid called “Yonatama” in Miyako Island, Okinawa. I thought I would tell that story this time.
