Nicolas Durocher-Yvon Nicolas Durocher-Yvon is a 24-year-old artist from South Africa. He currently resides in the city of Johannesburg, which is where he would acquire his honours degree in Fine Art at the University of Johannesburg in 2019. His works have been exhibited around South Africa, with his first notable exhibition being in 2015 at the age of 18. In 2019 he was selected as one of the finalists for the Sasol New Signatures art competition for his work “Dogma”, which was a political statement on the Berlin wall and apartheid. His works focus primarily on realistic attributes, by the use of charcoal and pastel. The dark use of contrasts in his work creates a bold statement to the piece as the charcoal manifests itself as the focal point. Although he has an appetite for hyper-realistic drawings, some of his works have since garnered an expressive approach so as to make the work feel more vulnerable, but also as a comment on modern day issues. At the core of most of his work is the charcoal medium, used to exaggerate and bolden subjects but also to soften them to create harmony in his work. With most of his pieces being composed of mixed media, he always aims to challenge himself with the work he creates, in regards to size, the materials he uses, and also the methods in which he uses them.
