Bio
Mary W Edwards I am passionate about creating informed works of art, which awaken emotional responses. Visually, I convey the world as I perceive it. I draw and paint images exploring contemporary issues such as: the neglected world of life models who bare their bodies to reveal their souls. My art involves analytical skills, technical awareness, intuition and chromatic sensitivity. As an “outsider” artist, I am largely self-taught supported by academically trained mentors (two Royal Academy, London scholars), art tutors / practitioners (at West Dean College of Arts) and artistic dialogue with peers. I have held two solo gallery exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows in South West England. I respond positively to displaying my art through digital platforms. I have an extensive international following online which includes art collectors, art dealers, art consultants, film directors etc. My comprehensive knowledge of 20th and 21st century art informs my personal practice. I am always gathering inspiration from art books, catalogues, exhibitions, videos, online interviews, reviews, erudite articles etc. My fascination with anatomy underlies my figurative works. Finally, music has a profound impact on my working processes. I incorporate rhythms into my mark-making, link sounds and colours or find direction through a song. I frequently choose titles linked with music – a form of synthaesia. My major artistic influences are: Jean-Michel Basquiat, William Kentridge, Cy Twombley and Picasso, of course!
