In this pair of paintings, the composition is dominated by the back balcony, with only a glimpse of the house’s interior structure visible through the door frame on the right. The back balcony space is actually quite simple, but the addition of a toilet on the left—a feature that shouldn’t be in this space—extends the sense of depth. The view through the door frame on the right pushes the space further back, suggesting that there are additional spaces within, and the two staircases open up possibilities for other interpretations.
