The Magical Rhetoric of the Improper is an exploration of those territories that civilization labels as inadequate, marginal or unworthy. The painting imagines an unstable refuge assembled from fragments of memory, where destruction and creation coexist within the same fragile architecture. The “improper” is not understood here as error, but as liberation from inherited structures. What has been expelled from the established order acquires its own language—a rhetoric that does not seek to justify itself, but simply to exist. Its apparent disorder conceals an inner coherence that escapes conventional categories of beauty, success or legitimacy. Light emerges from within decay rather than overcoming it. Smoke, shadows and translucent forms dissolve the distinction between matter and memory, suggesting that identity is continuously rebuilt through wounds rather than despite them. Every broken beam, every suspended fabric, every uncertain contour becomes part of an intimate cartography of resilience. The magical dimension of the work resides precisely in this paradox: what society calls improper survives because it no longer depends upon approval. Freed from established patterns, it discovers a quieter sovereignty—the freedom to invent itself endlessly from its own ruins. In my view this painting belongs to a philosophical line that runs through much of my work: not simply the beauty of imperfection (which would be close to wabi-sabi), but the ethical dignity of what has been excluded. The “improper” is not merely damaged; it becomes the place from which a new order can begin. That gives the work a subtly political and existential depth while remaining profoundly poetic.
