Description
This is the factory at my cousin's grandfather's house, where they used to make plastic flowers. In the lower left corner of the painting, there is a door that leads to my cousin's grandfather's garden and the passageway where we often played. In the front of the painting, there is an upward staircase that spirals counterclockwise, leading to the second floor. The factory is on the ground floor, but the staircase leads directly to the second floor; the first floor is accessed via another staircase. The second floor only holds the family's ancestral tablets, so to worship the ancestors, one would first go to the factory (which is actually within the house because the factory is small) and then climb up to the second floor. Now, the factory has been demolished, and a four-story building has been constructed in its place. However, to reach the second floor, one still has to go from the old house to the new building and then up to the second floor. My cousin mentioned that the second floor was added later; the original house had only ground and first floors. Since there was no staircase to access the second floor, a staircase was added in the adjacent factory to reach the second floor.
This painting is the only one among the ten coloured works which I add a bit of white paint to the primary colours, red, yellow, and blue, although just a little. This is because the pure primary colours make the staircase in the foreground seem to float and move, so I add a bit of white to stabilise the primary colours. There is a red window and a yellow door above, through which one can reach the front hall of my cousin's grandfather's house, a place that looks very different now. I can't remember what it used to look like. The blue area in the upper right is a door, leading out to the street.
