Bio
We are a couple of artists who decided to embark on the journey of abstractly expressing our inner world on canvas. We are using paint as a medium for channeling our passion through colour. We create unique, colorful and vibrant paintings. We have both always been interested in painting but only as a hobby. Just recently (2020), when our paths merged into one, we have decided to take this hobby a little bit further and try to make it our full time job.
We Love color and the infinitude of possibilities that an empty canvas offers to us. Each time we paint, we do it intuitively, without pre planning what the painting will look like because we see it as a limitation, a form of control that would not allow the freedom that we seek through art.
We decided to call our duo RainbowJAM because it is a representation of the combination of our names, which are Janis Voitkuns and Alice Murray. The word JAM is also associated with spontaneous artistic e press ion, which is a perfect description of how we are making our art. Jam is also a sweet treat just like our artworks. Rainbow contains all colors, hence the RainbowJAM, a colourful mixture of spontaneity composed of two beings who are alike yet completely different.
The most important thing to us is to understand ‘’what I am’’ and ‘’why I am’’ these questions give us inspiration to express ourselves through abstract expressionism. An abstract form of art is a great tool to pursue these mysteries.
About each of us:
Janis Voitkuns : I was born in 1992 in Riga, Latvia. I live permanently in England. I am a self-taught abstract expressionist. My artistic journey began a few years ago when I concluded that there are only two dimensions in existence; the artist and the creative expression. To me everything is literally different shades and combinations of colors, the possibilities are infinite. From those different variations of color and patterns, stories emerge, and we RainbowJAM are the artists that imagine and direct them onto canvas. The paradox of it all is that these stories, coming from two separate minds, are nested within each other. To me paradox and infinity in relation to the structure of existence is as important as the fundamental building blocks of this reality, and like in this painting that I created together with my dear Alice, that is what I tend to depict most of the time: the infinitude of parallel, alternative stories that exist within the infinite potential of our being.
Alice Murray: I was born in Poland in 1997 and live permanently in England. I am a self-taught abstract expressionist. My artistic journey started in early childhood but because of the poverty that I was born into I was not able to pursue my artistic nature through graduating art schools. I have always treated art as my quiet little hobby. My desire was always to one day be able to paint every day of my life and two years ago when I met Janis my dream came true. I am now an abstract expressionist slowly making my way into the world that I always dreamt about; this is the world where painting is my full time job. I have a very traumatic background and this is now a great inspiration for creating, I see my suffering as a motivation to find my happiness again in the world of art. I learned to channel my emotions using paint, intuitively picturing the energe ical properties of emotions that I am constantly overfilled with due to my traumas. I paint mostly with my hands, I see Hands as our sacred connection to the Heart Centre where we can find our connection to the soul.
These stories are creating systems of stories within relatively bigger stories, which are made of smaller ones. Like the cells in our bodies are smaller individual beings expressing their own freedom but at the same time, they are composing a bigger individual with its own freedom of expression. Seemingly separate and simultaneously working together as one being.
Personally I was always interested into the most fundamental subjects about the subjective and objective experiential realities. To me it is most important to understand what I am and why as an expression of existence to the deepest core as I believe it gives me great meaning to pursue these mysteries. So I came to the conclusion that there are only two dimensions in existence; the artist and the creative expression. To me everything is literally different shades and combinations of color, and it is infinite. From those different variations and patterns, stories emerge, and we are the artists that create and direct them. In addition, the paradox of it all is that these stories are nested within each other. Creating systems of stories within relatively bigger stories, which are made of smaller ones. Like the cells in our bodies are smaller individual beings expressing their own freedom but at the same time, they are composing a bigger individual with its own freedom of expression. Seemingly separate and simultaneously working together as one being. To me paradox and infinity in relation to the structure of existence is also very important as the fundamental building blocks of this reality. And like in this painting that I created together with my dear Alice, that is what I tend to depict most of the time; the infinitude of parallel, alternative stories that exist within the infinite potential of our being.
