My work flows around two main subjects, women and color. As a woman myself, this responds to a reflection on the representation of women through history, whether in the art realm or in more quotidian representations like those in advertisement and mass media, and how they affect us. The majority of those representations are constructed by and for men, and are disempowering for women. Therefore, instead of turning to those stereotypes I focus on portraying real women, women I know, trying to represent them in a more honest, sincere and authentic way. A portrait is a way of evoking a presence in its own absence. In this way I am interested in exploring the ways in which one can represent another person through painting and not limiting it to merely recreate a physical appearance. For that matter color is a useful resource specially because of its expressive potential. Therefore, the subjective and bold use of color is an important element of my work. Color opens me a door to explore my own subjectivity, without strings attached to the mere mimesis of the physical appearance of things. In that fruitful field opened to my by color I am free to play, allowing subtle elements like my own emotions or what I perceive about the seater to permeate and become present and tangible in my work. As well I am interested in the disruption of the representation produced by the marks of color, through this I want to evoke the complexity of the women I portray. I like to think of the women I paint as being like the colors with which I paint them: bold, intense, and strong.
