Maya Tohme is a Lebanese artist born in 1963 and living in Lebanon. Along the usual mediums she works with, such as watercolor, oil, and acrylics, she likes to experiment with unusual materials like broken glass, acetate, pebbles, strings, lace. One important aspect of her work is rendering depth and transparency by overlapping layers, trying to make underlying layers visible, as well as creating imprints of various elements. For her art is expression, art is freedom, and most important art is fun and playfulness. She draws her inspiration from life’s situations as well as her own emotions. The most prominent concept in her work is that of duality and how to make opposites meet. She is fascinated by the contrast between light and darkness, lightness and weight, fullness and void. Through her art, she aims at bringing more poetry and spirituality into the world.
